How this works
Independent reptile gear reviews built from what keepers actually report. Here is exactly what that means, including what we can't tell you.
Reptile gear advice online is a mess. Retailer reviews are filtered and gameable. Brand care sheets are marketing wearing a lab coat. Plenty of "best reptile thermostat" posts are affiliate roundups written by someone who never touched the product. When a bad thermostat or the wrong UVB bulb can genuinely harm an animal, that gap isn't just annoying, it's dangerous.
So this site does one narrow thing and tries to do it honestly: it collects what experienced keepers actually say about a piece of gear, in the places where they talk to each other with nothing to sell, and turns that into a straight answer. Every quote we publish is verbatim and links to the original comment, so you can click through and read it in context rather than take our word for it.
What we don't do: laboratory testing.
We don't run UV meters over bulbs for twelve months or put thermostats on a bench rig, and we won't print numbers implying we did. Some sites publish precise long-run decay figures; where we haven't measured something ourselves, we say so and score on what we can stand behind instead: published specifications, whether the thing physically fits the fixtures people own, live price and availability, and the weight of real owner reports. When the honest answer is "nobody in this thread has actually measured this," that is what the review says.
Our sources are Reddit keeper communities (r/leopardgeckos, r/BeardedDragons, r/ballpython, r/reptiles, r/snakes, r/CrestedGecko among others) and independent reptile forums including the MorphMarket community and Chameleon Forums. We deliberately exclude marketplace and store reviews. Amazon, Chewy and Petco ratings are incentivized, gameable and moderated by the seller, which makes them the easiest signal in the world to fake and the least worth trusting.
We publish the criticism too, including of the products we recommend. If keepers say the thing we picked has a real flaw, that goes in the review. If the community's favorite isn't something you can buy on Amazon, we say that as well, even though Amazon links are how the site is funded.
How we're funded
ReptileGearLab is reader-supported. Many of the product links on our site are affiliate links: if you click one and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases.
That funding never shapes what we say. We decide what to recommend first, then add the links, never the other way around. A product earns its place on the merits, whether or not it pays us anything, and we don't accept payment from brands for coverage, placement, or a better score.
Who writes this
Everything here is published under one house byline, ReptileGearLab, because that is the truth. There is no roster of specialist writers with individual beats, and we aren't going to invent one to look bigger than we are. Plenty of affiliate sites do exactly that, and given that our entire pitch is that we don't make things up, a made-up name on the page would be a strange place to start.
What should earn your trust isn't a byline, it's that every claim traces to something you can check yourself: a linked comment from a real keeper, a published spec, a live listing.

Build Quality
Materials, fit and durability, drawn from what long-term owners report about how the gear holds up in a warm, humid enclosure.
Safety & Reliability
Does it do its job consistently and safely: accurate temperatures, stable output, no electrical or fire risk, no failures that put the animal at risk.
Value
What you get for what you pay, relative to comparable gear at that price point.
Each dimension is scored 1.0-10.0 and averaged into an overall rating. One decimal place, intentionally, to reduce score clustering across the catalog.
