Bioactive Cleanup Crew: Springtails vs Isopods (and Do You Need One?)

Springtails and isopods are two halves of one crew, and we'd run both. Springtails are the micro-crew: near-microscopic, they graze mold and biofilm off damp surfaces, and they're the near-universal starting point for any humid bioactive build. Isopods are the macro-crew: they break down waste, shed skin, and leaf litter that springtails are too small to touch, and they want more moisture and more calcium to do it. Most established builds run both. If you only buy one thing, buy springtails.

The caveat is that a cleanup crew isn't universal equipment. A sterile setup, a paper-towel quarantine tub, or a bare-bottom enclosure you scrub yourself has no job for one, and a bone-dry arid enclosure will quietly kill a crew you paid for. A crew needs living soil, a damp corner, leaf litter to eat and hide in, and weeks to establish before it does anything you can see.

Bioactive Cleanup Crew: Springtails vs Isopods (and Do You Need One?)

Ask what cleanup crew to buy and you'll get the same two words back every time: springtails and isopods. Nobody tells you first that they do completely different jobs, at completely different scales, with different requirements, and that one of them is far closer to essential than the other.

Springtails are the half we'd buy first. Isopods are the half that fusses about moisture and calcium and may well get eaten by your gecko. And in a few common setups, a paper-towel quarantine tub or a bone-dry arid enclosure, the answer is that you don't need either.

Springtails and isopods do different jobs

Springtails are tiny, roughly a millimetre, and they eat mold, fungus, and the biofilm that grows on damp wood and soil. In a humid enclosure that's a big deal, because mold is the failure mode of a planted build. Keepers run them as preventive maintenance rather than as a feature: one leopard gecko keeper uses them "in all my naturalistic setups to combat mold, bacteria and fungi," which is a job description, not a hobby.

Isopods are the macro-crew. They're crustaceans, not insects, closer to a land shrimp than a bug, and they handle the bulk material: droppings, shed skin, dead plant matter, and leaf litter. They're slower, more visible, and much fussier about moisture, and they need a calcium source (cuttlebone, eggshell, limestone) to molt properly. Springtails won't break down a dropping. Isopods won't out-compete mold on a wet cork branch. Hence most builds running both.

If your budget or your patience only stretches to one, start with springtails. They establish faster, tolerate a wider range of setups, are harmless if your animal eats them, and they solve the problem most likely to ruin a humid enclosure. Isopods are the upgrade that gets the soil processing waste.

Do you need a cleanup crew at all?

Not always, and the community is more honest about this than the marketing is. A crew is a bioactive component. It needs living soil that stays damp somewhere, organic matter to eat, and time. Running paper towel, a quarantine tub, a bare-bottom enclosure, or any setup you strip and disinfect on a schedule? There's nothing for a crew to do and nothing for it to eat. You'd be buying livestock that starves.

Arid setups are the grey area. Plenty of keepers do run crews in a desert-style enclosure, but only by building a permanently damp corner for them, usually under the humid hide, and the skeptics have a point worth hearing. One leopard gecko keeper's blunt verdict: "Most bioactive setups aren’t bioactive certainly when it comes to arid environments. It really does take more than some soil, a plant and a few bugs." Their alternative is a naturalistic enclosure with some cleaner bugs and half the substrate replaced every six months, which is a defensible way to keep a dry-climate animal.

The humid build is where a crew earns its money without argument: crested geckos, dart frogs, tropical snakes, anything planted with a real humidity target. There it's close to standard equipment.

Which isopods: powder orange, dwarf whites, or dairy cows

Species choice is mostly a question about your animal rather than about the isopods. As one ball python keeper put it, "The type of isopod is mostly just what you prefer since you have a snake as opposed to if you were setting up for a bug eating reptile." A snake will ignore them. A gecko will hunt them.

  • Powder orange (Porcellionides pruinosus): the default starter. Hardy, fast, prolific, tolerant of a wide moisture range, and they breed quickly enough to outrun an animal that picks at them. Buying one isopod? Buy these.
  • Dwarf whites (Trichorhina tomentosa): tiny, pale, and they stay buried. This is what keepers switch to when the bigger isopods keep getting eaten, and it's the gentle choice for a small or easily bothered animal. They want it consistently damp, and they won't process waste as fast as a bigger species.
  • Dairy cows and other giants (Porcellio laevis): big, fast-working, and good at breaking material down, but they carry a requirement the small species don't. Isopod breeders are consistent that laevis has a high protein demand, and that an underfed colony goes looking for protein on its own. That's when a big isopod will nibble at shed skin, or at a soft-bodied or freshly molted animal that's sitting still and not objecting. The fix is unglamorous and it works: feed the colony protein directly, with fish flake, dried shrimp, or a similar dried animal protein, and the scavenging behaviour largely stops. Keepers separately report geckos eating the bigger isopods. Between the two, dairy cows aren't the species to learn the hobby on.

The species-swap story shows up repeatedly. One keeper running both a crested gecko and a leopard gecko found their crestie "ate a lot of her dairy cow isopods so i had to switch to dwarf whites," while the leo left the same species alone because they stayed burrowed. Same isopod, two outcomes, decided by the animal above them.

What a crew needs from the enclosure

A cleanup crew is livestock with three requirements. First, a moisture gradient: somewhere in the enclosure has to stay damp all the time, even if the rest dries out. In a tropical build that's automatic. In an arid one you build it deliberately, usually a wet corner under the humid hide, and you keep it wet.

Second, leaf litter and cover. Isopods eat decaying leaves and hide under bark, and without cover they're exposed to anything that hunts. The standing advice when an animal is eating the crew is to add cork bark flats, leaf litter, and moss, and to "let them establish on their own before she goes in." Springtails will also colonize the underside of leaf litter and breed there.

Third, time. A crew takes weeks, commonly one to two months, to build a population that's processing waste. Seeding an enclosure and checking for results next weekend tells you nothing. Neither does not seeing them: a healthy crew lives down in the substrate and gets judged by the absence of mold and the disappearance of waste, not by bugs you can count.

The substrate itself is part of the purchase. Dry sand, bare coco chips, or reptile carpet won't hold a crew. A soil-based bioactive mix will, which is why the Zoo Med ReptiSoil sits in the picks below as a companion rather than an afterthought.

Will your animal just eat them?

Often, yes, and that changes what you buy rather than whether you buy. Insect-eating reptiles treat a cleanup crew as a snack bar. The workarounds keepers use are the ones above: pick a prolific species, give the crew deep substrate and heavy cover, and let the population establish before the animal moves in. As one keeper diagnosing a vanished crew asked, "What species of isopod do you have? If they aren't prolific breeders, your gecko might have eaten them all."

Some keepers go the other way and skip isopods entirely. One crested gecko keeper whose animal strikes at anything that moves worried about substrate impaction and concluded: "Unfortunately that meant springtails only, no isopods." That's a reasonable build. Springtails are too small to trigger a strike and too small to cause a problem if swallowed.

One thing to be clear about: a crew is not a feeding plan. You choose it for how well it processes waste, not for nutrition, and the two lists barely overlap. Keep a separate breeding bin if your animal is eating the crew faster than it reproduces, and keep feeding real feeders.

Springtails, isopods, and the pest that looks like both

Three small things move in bioactive soil and only two of them are yours. Springtails are the pinhead-sized white specks that jump when disturbed and stay in or just above the substrate. Isopods are the segmented, armored, slow-walking crustaceans, anywhere from a grain of rice to a fingernail depending on species. Neither one flies.

Fungus gnats do. Small dark flies drifting up out of the soil and around the glass are a fungus gnat infestation, not a cleanup crew, and it usually means the substrate is staying too wet at the surface or arrived with larvae in it. Springtails compete with gnat larvae for the same fungal food and often suppress a mild case, but they aren't a treatment. Dry the surface layer, improve airflow, stop overwatering. And don't read the presence of flying insects as evidence your crew is working.

Buying live animals in the mail

Cultures ship as live animals in a cup of substrate, and the biggest cause of a bad order is weather at either end. A box that sits in a delivery van in a July heat wave or a January freeze can arrive with a dead or badly thinned culture, and no seller can control that. Time the order for mild weather, ship early in the week so nothing sits in a depot over a weekend, and open the cup the day it lands.

Local sourcing is the other route, and it has got easier: bioactive has gone mainstream enough that plenty of independent reptile shops now carry springtails and common isopods, and buying local removes the shipping risk entirely. Reptile expos are the same deal at better prices. If you do order online in a bad-weather month, buy the bigger breeding culture rather than the small cup, so a thinned arrival still has enough animals to recover.

One purchase habit worth adopting: keep a master culture. A tub of moist substrate with a pinch of yeast or a slice of vegetable will keep springtails breeding indefinitely, and splitting it is free. Do that once and you generally never buy springtails again, which is the argument for the larger culture up front.

Where we land

Running a humid, planted, soil-based enclosure? Buy springtails first and treat them as standard equipment, then add isopods to process waste. Start with powder orange if your animal will leave them alone or is slow enough not to matter, dwarf whites if it hunts or if you want something small and unobtrusive. Give the crew a permanently damp corner, real leaf litter, and a month or two before you judge it.

Running paper towel, a quarantine tub, or a bone-dry arid setup with no damp zone? Skip the crew and clean the enclosure yourself. That isn't a lesser way to keep a reptile, and it saves you from buying livestock with nothing to eat. Everyone else: the springtail culture and a starter isopod culture are, between them, a one-time purchase that keeps working for years.

Most bioactive setups aren’t bioactive certainly when it comes to arid environments. It really does take more than some soil, a plant and a few bugs. You’ll honestly be better just keeping a naturalistic enclosure enclosure and adding some cleaner bugs but replacing at least half of the substrate every 6 months.
