Chameleon Not Drinking? Read the Urates, Not the Eyes

Judge hydration by the urate, the pale part of the droppings, rather than by the animal's eyes. Urates leave the body white; a dehydrated chameleon reclaims moisture on the way out and passes them orange or dark yellow. That is an objective reading you get every time you clean, and it does not depend on catching the animal drinking or on interpreting a nervous face.

Deliver water three ways and let the chameleon choose. Mist two or three times a day, long enough that droplets sit on the leaves. Run a slow dripper onto foliage for an hour or more. And put a transparent glass up at perch height where the light catches it, which is a well-used method rather than a gimmick. The dripper, misting system and gauge we use are below. Skip recirculating fountains, never force water into a chameleon's mouth, and take a dehydrated animal to a vet for fluids.

Chameleon Not Drinking? Read the Urates, Not the Eyes

Most keepers worried that their chameleon is not drinking have a chameleon that is drinking. These are secretive animals about water, and with good reason: drinking means head down, eyes off the room, and a wild chameleon at a water hole is a chameleon at its most vulnerable. Yours is very unlikely to do it while you stand and watch.

That makes the whole question hard to answer by observation, which is why the useful skill here is not catching your chameleon in the act. It is knowing how to deliver water it will take, and how to read whether it took any.

You will probably never see it drink

Start here, because it resolves most of the panic. Chameleons drink when they feel unobserved. Keepers describe walking in on an animal sitting suspiciously beside its water doing nothing, then finding the level down later. One keeper puts the reason plainly: drinking is a vulnerable moment, the animal is focused and wants to feel secure, and most animals are more on edge at a watering hole. A chameleon you never catch drinking is not evidence of a chameleon that never drinks.

What is true is that the default setup fails. A shallow bowl on the floor of a tall screen cage is close to useless, not because standing water is inherently unrecognisable, but because an arboreal animal has no reason to climb down to floor level and the still surface gives it nothing to notice. Change the placement and the vessel and the same water becomes drinkable, which is the part most care sheets get wrong in both directions.

Read the urate, not the eyes

Sunken eyes are the sign everyone reaches for, and it is the least reliable one you can pick. A chameleon retracts its eyes when stressed or nervous, so a frightened but healthy animal can look dehydrated on inspection. Sunken eyes also accompany systemic illness, infection, kidney disease and malnutrition. They tell you something is wrong; they do not tell you it is thirst.

The urate is the reliable readout. Urates are the pale portion that comes out alongside the darker dropping, and they start white. As waste moves through, a dehydrated body reclaims moisture from them, and reclaimed urates come out orange or dark yellow. So a white urate means the animal had enough water it did not need to take any back, and an orange one means it did. Check it every time you clean, and you have a running record of hydration that does not depend on interpreting a nervous animal's face.

The other signs are worth knowing as a cluster rather than individually: lethargy, a loss of appetite, and skin that stays tented for a moment when gently pinched. Any of those alongside a dark urate is a chameleon that needs intervention rather than observation.

Movement is the trigger

The thing that makes a chameleon drink is water that moves or catches light. That is the single mechanism behind every method that works, and it is why a still bowl and a running dripper produce such different results from the same tap.

  • Mist two or three times a day. Run each session long enough to leave droplets hanging on the foliage rather than a token spray that evaporates. Aim at the plants, not at the animal; spraying a chameleon directly mostly just annoys it.
  • Add a dripper for an hour or more. A slow drip onto a leaf gives the chameleon a long window to drink on its own schedule instead of during the ninety seconds your mister runs. An afternoon drip doubles as a test: if the animal goes to it, it was thirsty.
  • Give the water somewhere to land. Dense foliage and broad leaves are what turn a spray into a hundred drinkable droplets. A sparse cage with two bare branches has nowhere to hold water.
  • Let it dry out in between. Wet then dry is the pattern. A cage that never dries breeds bacteria and invites respiratory infection, which is a serious problem in this species.

The glass method, and a real disagreement

Here the community splits, and it is worth reporting rather than flattening. The mainstream advice is misting plus a dripper. But a vocal group of long-time keepers argue that drippers alone are not enough, and that the reliable answer is a drinking glass: transparent, filled to the rim, placed up where the animal perches and where light hits it so the surface glints. Some keepers report years of chameleons drinking from a glass without fuss, and the trick offered for animals that ignore one is a cup with angles that catch the light and sparkle.

The argument for it is not just volume but function. A drip delivers a trickle; a glass lets the animal take a full mouthful, rinse its mouth, and wash its eyes, which a dripper cannot do. We are not going to tell you the dripper crowd is wrong, because misting and drippers demonstrably keep chameleons hydrated. Our position is that these are complements and the glass costs nothing to try: you already own a suitable one. Put it at perch height with a clear approach to the rim from above, and see whether the level drops.

Never force water into the mouth

One intervention to rule out before you are tempted by it. Syringing or squirting water into a chameleon's mouth risks pushing it into the airway, and keepers who have watched that go wrong are blunt about the consequences. Chameleons have no diaphragm and cannot cough, so they clear aspirated liquid very poorly.

If an animal does need help getting water in, the safe version is ambient rather than forced: keepers use a warm shower run against the wall, with a potted plant for the chameleon to sit on, so the room fills with warm mist and water drips off the leaves. That gives the animal every opportunity to drink and no opportunity to inhale. Anything beyond that belongs with a vet.

Skip the recirculating fountain

Pet shops sell little pumped fountains and waterfalls for exactly this purpose, and they are one of the few products we will tell you to avoid outright. The problem is not the concept, it is what ends up in the reservoir. Drinking triggers a bowel response in chameleons, so the animal frequently defecates into the water it is drinking from, and loose feeder insects drown in it. A pump then recirculates that mixture back over the foliage.

The hoses and internals of these units cannot be cleaned properly, biofilm establishes, and you end up spraying bacteria at an animal whose lungs are unusually vulnerable. Chameleons have no diaphragm and cannot cough, so they clear fluid and mucus from their airways poorly, which is why respiratory infections in this species are both common and serious. A dripper solves the same problem with fresh water and no reservoir. If you want automation, buy a real misting system rather than a fountain.

When it is a vet visit

A chameleon that is lethargic, has persistently dark urates, is not eating, or has skin that tents and stays tented is past the point where more misting fixes it. Real dehydration is treated with fluids by a reptile vet, and the animals that die of this are usually the ones whose keepers spent another fortnight adjusting the misting schedule first.

Sunken eyes with no other symptom are the one case to think about rather than react to, because stress alone produces them. Look at the urate, look at appetite and activity, and judge the cluster. If two or more line up, book the appointment.

Our call

Stop trying to catch your chameleon drinking. You are unlikely to manage it, and it is the wrong test anyway. Read the urate instead: white means the animal had water to spare, orange means its body has been taking water back and you are already behind. That check is free, objective, and available every time you clean the cage.

On delivery, run all of it. Mist properly two or three times a day so the leaves carry droplets, add a dripper for an hour or more, and put a transparent glass up at perch height where the light catches it, because the keepers who swear by that method are not making it up and it costs you nothing to test. Skip pumped fountains, never syringe water into the mouth, and let a vet handle real dehydration. Keep a hygrometer in the cage so you can see it drying between sprays, which is the other half of keeping this species healthy.

Use the drinking glass. You don't need to see them drinking just know they are. Drippers are not enough to give them what they need. Plus drippers don't allow for them to wash their eyes out or get a full mouth of water to help rinse bacteria out of the mouth and into the digestive tract to be expelled.

Specifically getting a glass cup, ideally one with some angles on it that help to catch the light and sparkle just a bit, has been the advice I've seen for chameleons that stubbornly refuse to drink from a cup. Might be worth a shot to see if that helps, it helped with mine in the past.

my concern would be him forcing too much water in at once and flooding their lungs that’s why we say if they are dehydrated to put a plant in the shower they can climb on and turn the shower on and let the water hit the wall and drip onto the leaves for them to drink
