How big does it need to be?
The community minimum for an adult ball python is a 4x2x2 foot enclosure, sold as a "120 gallon." The reasoning is straightforward: ball pythons commonly reach four to six feet, they are heavy-bodied, and they need room to fully stretch out along with enough floor to hold a warm end and a genuine cool end. A tank that's too small can't maintain that gradient, and the snake ends up with nowhere correct to be.
Bigger is fine, and often better. Keepers happily run 5x2x2 and 6x2x2 enclosures without humidity or heat trouble, as long as the enclosure is well cluttered. The old worry that a big enclosure "stresses" a ball python is mostly a clutter problem in disguise: a bare big tank feels exposed, but a big tank packed with hides, plants, and cover is enrichment, not stress. They're nocturnal, so a snake that seems to hide all day is often exploring at night when you don't see it.
Can you start a baby in a 4x2x2?
Yes, and it's usually the smart move. The old advice to raise a hatchling in a tiny tub or 10-gallon comes from a real concern (a baby in a big bare space can feel insecure and go off food), but the fix is clutter, not a small box. Pack a 4x2x2 with multiple hides, plants, branches, and ground cover so there's no open space, and a baby settles in fine. Keepers report hatchlings going straight into a 4x2x2 and eating without missing a beat.
The honest alternative is to start in a 40 gallon (36x18x18) and upgrade later, which spreads the cost out and buys you time to dial in the bigger enclosure. Just know a 40 gallon buys roughly a year before you're shopping again, so starting with the 4x2x2 usually saves money and a second setup. Whatever you pick, the clutter matters more than the square footage.
PVC over glass, and it is not close for a ball python
This is the decision that separates an easy ball python from a frustrating one. Because a ball python needs high humidity, the enclosure's job is to hold moisture in, and glass with a screen top does the opposite. Keepers put it bluntly: glass is a poor heat and humidity insulator, and a mesh or screen top makes holding the right humidity difficult, sometimes impossible. The classic beginner trap is the glass Exo Terra with the screen lid, and the classic beginner experience is chasing humidity that keeps escaping through it.
Solid PVC panels change the equation. They insulate, so you hold heat with less wattage, and they don't bleed moisture, so your humidity sits where you set it instead of falling all day. Nearly every experienced keeper steers new owners to PVC (or a similar solid-panel material) for this reason. It's the single highest-impact choice you'll make for this animal.
The top: solid, with the heat inside
Related to the material is the top, because that's where humidity escapes and where heat comes in. The setup keepers favour for a ball python is a solid-topped enclosure with the heat source mounted inside, typically a radiant heat panel (RHP), rather than a bulb sitting over an open screen. A solid top holds humidity, and an internally mounted panel warms the enclosure without a hot glass surface or an open mesh vent dumping your moisture.
If you already own a glass, screen-topped tank, you don't have to throw it out: keepers make them work by covering most of the screen (foil tape or an acrylic sheet) to cut the humidity loss, leaving a gap for the heat source. It's more fiddly than buying PVC, but it's a legitimate fix. Either way, the humidity itself is built from the bottom up with deep substrate, which does more for your numbers than any gadget.
Which PVC, and why you will seal it anyway
When keepers name PVC brands, the same few come up: Dubia.com for the affordable end, and higher-tier makers like Kages, BlackBox, and Reptile Kage. Most of them sell direct from their own sites rather than through Amazon, though buyable PVC 4x2x2 enclosures of the right type are easy to find online too. A keeper in these threads uses the Dubia 4x2x2, calls it cheap for its size and easy to assemble, and notes it leaks a little from a corner joint.
That last part is worth internalising because it's universal: every PVC enclosure needs its seams sealed with aquarium-safe silicone on assembly, even the expensive ones. As one keeper put it, a leaking corner is "just from not siliconing the joints. Every pvc enclosure needs to be sealed, even Kages." Budget an hour and a tube of silicone into any PVC purchase, and don't let a first-fill leak scare you; it's expected and it's a five-dollar fix.
Clutter is not optional
Whatever you buy, a ball python enclosure is only as good as how densely it's furnished. Multiple hides (at least one on the warm side and one on the cool side), plants, branches, and ground cover turn open space into security, and they're what let you use a big enclosure without stressing the snake. Pair that with the deep, damp substrate that actually holds humidity, and verify what you're getting with a real hygrometer, because the cheap dial gauges lie and "it feels humid" is not a number.
The bottom line
Buy a 4x2x2 (120 gallon) PVC enclosure with a solid or coverable top, and go bigger if you like as long as you clutter it heavily. Skip the glass tank with the screen lid, because holding a ball python's humidity through it is a battle you don't need to sign up for. Start your baby in the full-size enclosure with lots of cover, seal the PVC joints on assembly, build your humidity from deep substrate, and you've removed the single most common source of ball python husbandry stress before it starts.

“Starting off with a 4x2x2 is nice because you don't have to upgrade them later on, but a benefit to starting them off in a 40g (36x18x18), is you have time to buy things over time for the 4x2x2. A nice thermostat , RHP, build a cool back wall for it, save up for a nicer cage (blackbox/reptile kage vs Dubai etc), and then let it sit for a week to balance your temps and humidity. Then when it comes time to move them, you already have a cage ready to go for another snake.”
