If you keep a sun-basking reptile like a bearded dragon, the basking bulb is the piece that most directly mimics the thing it evolved under. Get it right and your animal thermoregulates the way it should; get it wrong and no amount of ambient heat fixes it, because the animal will not recognise a spot it cannot see to bask on.
The good news is the answer is settled and cheap. The confusion is all in the details, brand, wattage, beam, and a supply quirk almost nobody warns you about. Here is the whole decision.
Why a halogen, and not a ceramic emitter or DHP
This is the part keepers are most united on. A halogen flood emits visible light plus infrared A and a little B, which is close to the spectrum of sunlight, and that combination is what a basking reptile is actually looking for. A ceramic heat emitter and a deep heat projector both produce heat without that sun-like light, which makes them good for ambient or night warmth and poor as a basking source, because the animal orients to brightness. Put simply, a lightless heater can warm the air to the right number and still fail the animal, because it never signals "bask here."
So the halogen is not one option among several for daytime basking. It is the option, and the others are for different jobs.
Reptile-branded or a generic hardware-store bulb?
Here is where you can save real money if you want to. A PAR38 halogen flood is a mass-market lighting product, and the reptile-branded versions are, electrically, the same thing with a higher price and a gecko on the box. Keepers who have figured this out buy generic and never look back, and they are not wrong to.
Two honest reasons to still buy a reptile-branded flood anyway. First is availability, covered below, which is a bigger deal than it sounds. Second is convenience and consistency: a reptile-branded flood is stocked year-round, ships reliably, and comes in the wattages keepers actually use, so you are not gambling on whether a hardware-store SKU is in stock this month. If a few dollars saved matters more than that certainty, buy the generic. If you would rather not think about it, buy the branded one. Both are the same bulb doing the same job.
The supply catch nobody warns you about
This is the detail that turns a simple purchase into a frustrating one, and it is worth knowing before you shop. Energy-efficiency regulations have pushed retailers to drop halogens in favour of LEDs, so the high-wattage PAR38 halogens keepers rely on have quietly vanished from most hardware stores. Keepers describe hunting for them and coming up empty locally, then ordering GE or Philips PAR38 halogens online instead.
There is a second wrinkle on top of that: some of those higher-wattage halogen floods will not ship to every US state, with keepers specifically reporting that certain wattages will not deliver to California. None of this makes the bulb wrong; it just means "grab one at the store" is no longer reliable advice, and it is the honest reason a reptile-branded flood that ships anywhere and is always in stock is worth the small premium to a lot of people.
Wattage: size it to your enclosure
Wattage is where people actually go wrong, more than brand. The right number depends on your enclosure size and how far the basking surface sits from the bulb, not on a one-size figure.
- A standard 4x2x2 with the basking spot raised toward the bulb is usually happy on something in the 75-100W range.
- A large or tall enclosure needs much more. One keeper runs a 250W lamp (two in winter) to hold a basking spot in a 240-gallon tank.
- Going too low is the common mistake: a keeper flatly notes an 80W bulb "will not give you much heat at all above room temperature" in a big tank.
The practical method is to buy a sensible wattage for your tank, then adjust the basking height and confirm the actual surface temperature with a thermometer rather than trusting the box.
Flood, not spot
Halogen basking bulbs come as floods (a wide beam) and spots (a tight, concentrated beam), and for most basking setups a flood is the better choice. A wide beam warms a whole basking platform evenly, so the animal can position itself comfortably; a narrow spot concentrates the heat into a small, intense circle that is easy to overshoot and harder to settle on. Keepers deliberately choose floods for that even spread, and one common complaint about a specific reptile-branded bulb is exactly that its beam is too narrow. If your product choice gives you the option, pick the flood.
Always on a dimming thermostat
A basking bulb is a powerful heat source pointed at an animal, so it does not run unregulated, ever. The nuance for a bright bulb specifically is that you want a dimming thermostat, not an on/off one: an on/off unit cycles a visible bulb on and off all day, which both flickers the light and, as keepers note, blows the lamp faster, while a dimmer eases the power and preserves the bulb.
A keeper's clean summary: a dimming thermostat "preserves the life of the lamp, prevents the enclosure from overheating and prevents a fire hazard." The refinement many experienced keepers use is to size the wattage so the bulb barely needs dimming at full basking temperature, then set the thermostat probe on the cool side purely as an overheat cutoff. What about metal halide or mercury vapour?
Worth a sentence, because keepers bring it up. Metal halide and mercury vapour lamps put out far more light and, in the case of mercury vapour, UVB and heat from one bulb, and some keepers consider them the top tier. They are also pricier, run hotter, need specific fixtures, and cannot be dimmed the same way, so they are a specialist upgrade rather than the default. For most keepers a halogen flood plus a separate UVB tube is simpler, cheaper, and easier to control. If you are chasing maximum light output in a large open enclosure, that is when the halide conversation starts.
The bottom line
Buy a halogen flood in a wattage that suits your enclosure, run it on a dimming thermostat, and confirm the basking temperature with a thermometer. That is the whole job, and it is the setup the experienced end of the hobby has settled on.
Save money with a generic PAR38 if you can source one; buy a reliable reptile-branded flood if you would rather it just show up and always be in stock. Either way you are buying the same sun-like heat, which is the one thing a ceramic emitter and a deep heat projector cannot give your basking animal.
