Almost any infrared thermometer will do this job, and the one keepers name when asked is the Etekcity. It's cheap, it's accurate enough for reptile work, and there is no meaningful brand war here: unlike UVB bulbs, a temp gun is a commodity and the community treats it as one.

The mistake worth avoiding costs nothing to fix. A temp gun and a probe thermometer are not competing purchases and they will never agree, because they measure different things: the gun reads the temperature of a surface you point it at, the probe reads the air around it. If you own only one, you are guessing about half your enclosure.

Best Infrared Thermometer for Reptiles

This is the cheapest genuinely useful thing you can buy for a reptile. A temp gun is how you find out that the basking rock your thermostat swears is at 95 is actually at 130, and it takes about four seconds to check.

It's also the most misunderstood, because it gives a different number than your probe and people assume one of them is broken. Neither is. Here's what it does, what it doesn't, and which one to buy.

The one thing to understand: surface versus air

Nearly every "my thermometer readings don't match" thread comes down to this, and once it clicks the rest of the decision is easy.

  • A temp gun measures a surface. Point it at a basking rock and it tells you how hot that rock is. That's the number that burns an animal, and nothing else in your setup reports it.
  • A probe measures air, or itself. A probe reports the temperature of the probe: the air around it, or the surface it's touching, or the lamp energy falling on it. That's ambient, not surface.

The keeper explanation is better than any manufacturer's: a probe is seeking the ambient air temperature, while the gun is seeking the surface temperature of an object, which tells you how much energy the lamp is actually putting out. They disagree because they are answering different questions. Warm air rises, so a probe two inches under a bulb and a thermometer at substrate level will always read differently, and that is physics rather than a fault.

Which is why the answer to "gun or probe?" is both, and why they cost about as much together as one bad decision.

Does the brand matter?

Barely, and this is the useful finding. Ask which UVB bulb to buy and the community will give you two brands and a warning. Ask which temp gun to buy and you mostly get a shrug: the guns work, they're cheap, and the keepers who name one name the Etekcity because they own other things by them and it works.

That's a real answer, not an absence of one. Do not overspend here. The money in a temperature setup belongs in the thermostat, which is the thing standing between your heater and your animal. The gun is the audit tool, and a twenty dollar audit tool is fine.

What actually matters when picking one

  • Range: irrelevant for reptiles. Every one of these reads far past anything in your enclosure. Ignore the giant numbers on the box, they are aimed at people checking pizza ovens and engine blocks.
  • The beep: genuinely worth checking, and the one real usability complaint keepers raise. At least one keeper went looking specifically for a gun they could silence, because a device that beeps every time you take a reading gets old when you are checking a nervous animal's enclosure.
  • Emissivity: the honest caveat. Different surfaces absorb and radiate heat differently, so a gun gives you a very good idea rather than a laboratory number. Fine for "is this rock dangerous", not a calibration instrument.
  • Laser dot: aiming aid only. It does not measure anything, and it does not mean the reading is from that exact spot.

Where to point it, and where to put the probe

Both tools are useless in the wrong place, and this is where keepers spend most of their troubleshooting.

  • Temp gun: at every surface the animal can actually touch. The basking spot, the rock or slate under the lamp, the floor of the warm hide, the glass in the corner that gets afternoon sun.
  • Thermostat probe: two to four inches directly beneath the heat source it regulates. Its job is controlling the lamp, not reporting how the animal feels.
  • Thermometer probe: lower, near the substrate where the animal lives, ideally with readings both inside and outside the hides.
  • Heat mat probe: between the mat and the tank, outside the enclosure.

Because the thermostat probe sits close to the heat and the thermometer sits at animal level, they will not match, and you tune the thermostat setpoint until the thermometer reads what you want rather than until the thermostat display looks right. Keepers running ball pythons commonly describe adjusting until the thermometer reads in the high eighties to around ninety, which usually means setting the thermostat a couple of degrees higher than feels intuitive.

What the gun does not replace

It does not monitor. A temp gun tells you what a surface is doing at the exact second you pull the trigger, and then it stops caring. It is a spot check, not a watchman, which is why it sits alongside a thermostat rather than replacing one.

It also does not read air. For ambient temperature and humidity, keepers increasingly reach for a small Bluetooth hygrometer, with Govee named repeatedly as the simple option that removes the probe-placement argument entirely. And none of it substitutes for the controller: if you do not have a thermostat on your heat source, a temp gun just tells you accurately how badly it is going.

The bottom line

Buy the Etekcity, spend the twenty dollars, and stop researching. Check every surface your animal can reach, especially the first week after any change to the setup.

Then buy the thing it does not replace: a probe or a small hygrometer for air temperature, and a real thermostat on the heat source. Those three answer different questions, and the keepers who never post panicked temperature threads are the ones who own all three and stopped expecting them to agree.

Probes and thermometers seek to measure different things. Your probe is seeking to measure the ambient air temperature. A probe is best placed in a shady area. There isn't a meaningful temperature gradient in an enclosure - the reason why the probe raises towards the basking end is that it's affected by the energy from the lamp. The temperature gun is seeking to measure the surface temperature of an object. This gives you an idea of how much energy the lamp is outputting (but not exactly, as different surfaces absorb different amounts of heat).

Probe thermometers give you the temperature of the probe, heat guns the one from the surface you point at. It eventually takes the temperature of the surface it is in contact with (or the air), or it can also get hot from the heat lamp (in that case it will get hotter because it is metal).

Thermostat probes need to be secured 2-4" directly beneath the heat source they're regulating. Thermometer probes should be placed lower, near the substrate. Ideally, you would have some both inside and outside of your hides. Hygrometer placement should be on the cold side, about 2" above the substrate.

the closer to the heat source, the higher the temperature will be so it is normal to have one temp at the thermostat probe and another from your thermometer at substrate level. that's just due to physics and warm air rising. your probe should only be 2-4" from the heat source, however, so that needs to be adjusted. then you adjust the setpoint for the thermostat to achieve the right temperature as read by the thermometer, which is usually a couple of degrees higher than you'd think it needs to be.

The probes you are currently using work as thermometer/hydrometer. The thermometer measures ambient temperature. For that, I’d suggest a Govee. It’s much simpler.
