An on/off unit switches a light fully on and off as it cycles, which strobes the enclosure in a way that stresses a day-active animal and burns the bulb out quickly. The gold-standard dimming thermostats keepers name are the Herpstat 1 and the Vivarium Electronics VE-200, sold direct rather than on Amazon; keepers warn that the cheapest bargain dimmers can read inconsistently and swing the basking temperature, so if you buy one on Amazon get a genuine proportional unit rather than a bottom-dollar one. There is a legitimate second approach worth knowing: some experienced keepers do not put the basking bulb on a thermostat at all, and instead dial in the temperature by choosing the right wattage and adjusting the bulb's height, then checking the surface with a temp gun periodically to make sure nothing has drifted. That works and is stable once set, but it demands a stable room temperature and regular checks; the dimming thermostat is the more forgiving, hands-off option, and it is what this guide recommends for most keepers.
Night, and cold rooms
Turn the basking bulb and the lights off at night. Blue tongues need a real day and night cycle, and leaving a bright bulb running around the clock both denies them that and wastes the bulb. Night temperatures in the 60s, even down toward the mid-60s, are perfectly safe for a blue tongue, and most keepers simply let the enclosure track the room overnight. For enclosures where the bulb is within 12"-18" or so of the basking platform/stone I prefer high wattage regular incandescent bulbs. They do a better job at raising ambient temps and can still get a piece of slate or tile hot enough for basking. I mostly just use Fluker bulbs.
