I used excavator clay to build a cave system on the hot side and then a mix of terra Sahara and DIY soil/sand mix for the rest. It allows for a nice, naturalistic, rough surface to aid with shedding while also accommodating the loose substrate needs. Works really well for me and my guy. You can also use it as an additive in a DIY soil blend, as mentioned.

As long as you get it wet and aren't using it as straight substrate you should be good. I've seen a lot of people recommend that Excavator/sand/dirt mix, again I think getting it wet to clear up the dust is crucial. I did multiple thin layers to make sure it holds, my girl climbs and occasionally scratches at it and while some breaks off, it's never dusty. I just take the chunks and put them back in the bag, just add water and they're right back to clay.

I've used bendocate or something clay, if you Google excavator clay alternative it comes up. It's completely natural and a far far cheaper than excavator clay.
