For a first-time bearded dragon keeper staring down a shopping list, that's an easy thing to want, and plenty of people run one.

  • You want to tune basking heat and UVB independently, or dim the heat. A fused all-in-one bulb can do neither. Run a separate basking bulb.

Three things about a mercury vapor bulb decide whether it belongs in your setup.

Match the wattage to your enclosure height first. A taller tank wants more wattage to push heat and UVB down to the basking spot; a shorter one wants less so it doesn't overheat. Mount it in a ceramic dome rated for that wattage, well above the basking surface, and check the basking temperature with a separate thermometer or an infrared temp gun rather than trusting the number on the box. Output shifts with distance, and your eyes are not a thermometer.

Then deal with the UVB blind spot. Buy a Solarmeter, measure the UVB at basking height when the bulb is new, and write the install date on a piece of tape on the fixture. Replace it on that schedule, every six to twelve months, even when it still looks bright, because it will. If a Solarmeter isn't in the budget, take that as the signal that a T5 tube on a fixed replacement date is the safer setup for you. And in a longer enclosure, plan around one bulb covering one spot: the animal has to be able to reach that spot to get any UVB at all.

Convenience is the case for it. Reliability is the case against. UVB from one spot, fading where you can't see it, welded to a heat source you can't tune, in a bulb that blows more easily than it should. The modern consensus drifted to a separate T5 tube and a separate basking bulb for a plain reason: two controllable parts deliver UVB more dependably than one clever bulb. Want the simplest possible setup and willing to babysit it? Buy the PowerSun with clear eyes. Want a setup you can trust and mostly forget? Split the jobs.

"Provides Essential UVB" ....Yeah, no. I guess you could use it if you want and if it works fine, doesn't randomly explode, and doesn't give too much heat. Just add an UVB tube to that.

Cost way to much, its damn near impossible to the right amount of uv while balancing the correct temps. They are delicate and blow very easy and do not replace a t5 uv bulb. It's way more cost effective to just use t5 uv and 90 watt par38 halogen flood lamps for basking. A 24 inch uv bulb is 20 to 30 bucks plus the halogens are about 4 dollars a bulb.

The bulbs also don’t give enough range. They provide a high concentration of UVB in a small spot, beardies need 1/2 - 2/3 of the tank to have UVB coverage.

Mercury vapour bulbs are spot sources of UVB. This means they only provide the correct UVB levels over a small area, leaving the rest of the enclosure with no UVB at all. You need a tube to get proper coverage across the enclosure, because bearded dragons need long enclosures (1.2m/4ft minimum for an adult).
